As explained Diego Peral Pacheco and Thomas Cabaces Hurtado, obstetrics is a very old specialty. From the beginning of humanity women give birth assisted by someone, husband, family and experts that over time would develop a specific job. This assistance was primarily run by women until the late sixteenth century. In the seventeenth labor begins to be treated by doctors.

In the nineteenth century the study of anatomy and physiology of the genital organs discovered new medical knowledge other than reproduction. The invention and use of instruments such as the speculum, probes, hysterometer, pelvimeter, and stethoscope developed new techniques represent a breakthrough in the care of women. (more…)
