THE MONITORS
A monitor is a system that monitors the functioning of some body function. In general, there is recorded a screen where a figure or an image showing what is happening across the device. The monitors are connected to a body part by means of sensors and cables.
Monitors are used in medicine of many types. They serve to record the functioning of an organ or system. This allows detection of health changes and react in case of changes that pose a risk to the patient / child. Some examples are:
* Cardiac Monitors: connected to electrodes on the surface of the body / skin, they know the functioning of the heart. There are different types. Usually recorded in heart rate or number of times the heart beats in one minute, the shape of the electrocardiogram, heart rate, ie if it beats slower or faster than normal.
* Monitors Respiratory detect chest movement with breathing. So record the respiratory rate or number of breaths that are done in a minute if breathing is rhythmic or pauses or apneas occur.
* Blood Gas Monitors: detected through the skin content of oxygen or carbon dioxide in the blood. These two gases indicate if the lungs are working properly.
* Blood pressure monitors: they can be isolated or attached to the cardiac monitor. Periodically take blood to the patient (in this case, the baby.)
* Intracranial pressure monitors: are used in case the baby has hydrocephalus and has been or will be operated in the head. Measure cerebrospinal fluid pressure within the brain. These are less common.
