Most babies graduate of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU by its acronym in English) do not need special medical equipment when they are discharged. Some babies in the NICU are in good health to go home, but need the assistance of special equipment.
If you were discharged your baby with a medical team, you must learn to use and practice how to use it before leaving the hospital. Usually, the company that provides the machine will send a person to the NICU or your home to show you how to use it properly.
The three most common types of equipment that are prescribed for babies are the apnea monitor, feeding tube and oxygen.
Many infants have episodes of apnea (a periodic interruption of breathing). If the child has overcome this problem in the hospital, you may need an apnea monitor at home temporarily.
The monitor connects the baby with soft pads and adhesive or by a soft belt that fits around the breast. The monitor sounds an alarm if the baby stops breathing or the heart rate is too fast or too slow.
Parents use the monitor when the baby is sleeping or can not watch. Before discharge from the hospital, you will learn:
